Hurricanes AAU spring tryouts

FAQs ABOUT HIGH HOOPS HURRICANES AAU

Who can participate?
High Hoops AAU is open to boys and girls in Grades 3-12, from any town.

When are the tryouts?
The tryout schedule is listed in the poster above. There is no fee to try out, but all players must first be registered (click on appropriate link at the bottom of this page) before attending a tryout. Please be at your tryout 10 minutes early in order to check in.

When does the season start and end? How many practices and tournaments are there?
Practices begin the week of March 10. There are two practices per week most weeks. Some weeks, especially later in the season, there might be only one practice. Each team will participate in at least five weekend tournaments, starting in late March and ending in May. Some teams might play in an additional tournament or two (based on player availability), for which there will be an additional fee.

Where are the team practices?
Uxbridge teams will practice in Uxbridge or Douglas. Hopkinton teams will practice in Hopkinton.

Where are the tournaments?
The tournament schedule will not be finalized until early March, but we attempt to find tournaments reasonably close by in order to minimize the amount of driving everyone must do. Based on past history, most tournaments will be about a 30-minute drive from where your team practices, but it depends on schedule and availability and other factors — such as trying to ensure we have competitive games.

When do we get the game schedule for the tournaments?
Most tournaments send out the schedule 2-3 days prior, so there is not much advance notice. Typically, teams are guaranteed three games — usually two games on Saturday (could be anytime, but generally within a 4-hour time span) and one on Sunday morning, then a possible playoff game or two Sunday afternoon. Some tournaments do not have playoffs, so the schedule could be different.

How much does it cost?
It costs nothing to register for tryouts. If your child is selected for a team, the base fee is $495. For new players — or returning players who need a new uniform — the uniform package is an additional $75. It includes a jersey, shorts and T-shirt. Teams that participate in more than five tournaments will have an additional fee — that will be determined after the teams are formed and we have more information about player availability.

Is the entire amount due at once?
When your child is extended an offer to join a team, we require a $295 down payment to hold their spot. The remaining amount is due prior to the first tournament in late March.

Who will coach my child’s team?
Coaches will be assigned after the teams have been finalized. We have coaches with decades of experience coaching basketball at the youth and high school level, and sometimes we will use a parent coach if that person has the requisite experience and ability.

What is the level of commitment expected of players?
While it’s obviously preferable that players attend as many practices and games as possible, we understand that everyone has other commitments, including other sports. We ask that you inform us of potential conflicts before the season so we can plan accordingly.
